Bitcoin Awareness in Emerging Markets

When asked “have you ever heard of Bitcoin before today,” 48% of Indonesian respondents said yes, followed by 45% in Vietnam, and 34% in the Philippines — all Asian countries. South Africa and Mexico had the lowest response rates of 13% and 16% respectively

58% of all respondents said they would “feel comfortable” investing in virtual currency. This number was highest in Kenya (74%), which could be due to the popularity of its mobile money service M-Pesa, which means people are already comfortable with digital money – Rebecca Grant

In Iceland, Near the Arctic Circle, You Can Find the Mines of Bitcoin

The center of the operation is a fluorescent-lit room with more than 100 whirring silver computers, each in a locked cabinet and each cooled by blasts of Arctic air shot up from vents in the floor. The machines are worth about $20,000 each on the open market.

There are Bitcoin mining installations in Hong Kong and Washington State, among other places, but Mr. Abiodun chose Iceland, where geothermal and hydroelectric energy are plentiful and cheap. And the arctic air is free and piped in to cool the machines, which often overheat when they are pushed to the outer limits of their computing capacity – Nathaniel Popper

Made In Space

We are putting the first 3d printer in space, on the space station next year. We are opening up space access to everybody. You’re literally going to be able to just send us files, we’ll be able to hit print and whatever you had on your computer screen will be in space minutes, hours later.

Oculus Rift

Virtual reality, long a dream of gamers and science fiction buffs, has moved much closer to reality since Oculus burst onto the scene earlier this year. The company got a significant vote of confidence recently, in the form of a $75-million investment round led by one of Silicon Valley’s most highly regarded venture capital firms, Andreessen Horowitz

We believe Oculus will not only alter the gaming landscape but will redefine fundamental human experiences in areas like film, education, architecture, and design,” Andreessen said.

Venture firms bet on companies, such as Facebook and Airbnb (both in Andreessen Horowitz’s portfolio), that will grow huge user bases, so it makes sense to see Andreessen looking far down the road. Other experts have told Singularity Hub that medicine and machine repairs will also likely be important fields for virtual reality headsets – Cameron Scott

3D Systems (DDD) & Stratasys (SSYS)

The 3D printing industry as a whole has also experienced incredible growth. We’re seeing more retailers, like our friends at UPS, offer in-store 3D printing. The price of 3D printers for the home and office continues to drop. And 3D printing is constantly making stock market headlines

The Vietnam Stock Index (VNINDEX)

I think the Vietnamese stock market, which this year was up 22% which is not bad for an emerging market, will continue to go up – Marc Faber

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the country’s central bank, has decided not to intervene on whether businesses can accept Bitcoin as a means of transacting goods and services.

“Whether or not businesses accept Bitcoins in exchange for their goods and services is a commercial decision in which MAS does not intervene,” it told Singapore-based Bitcoin trading platform Coin Republic in an email. He says he’s submitting a polished version to the state’s Attorney General in the form of a ballot proposition proposal within the next 48 hours. “Six Californias” already has a campaign website up and is eager for an army of volunteers

California has a long secessionist history, and there are a number of folks who want to split the West Coast into smaller territories.

Life Extension

Australian and US researchers hope an anti-ageing compound could be trialled on humans as early as next year, following a key breakthrough that saw the ageing process reversed in mice.

Two-year-old mice were given a compound over a week, moving back the key indicators of ageing to that of a six-month-old mouse. Researchers said this was the equivalent of making a 60-year-old person feel like a 20-year-old

Dr Nigel Turner, senior research fellow at UNSW and co-author of the study, told Guardian Australia the rate of age reversal in mice was “amazingly rapid”

“We mapped the pathway to ageing carefully, but it was a real surprise to see the markers of ageing move back so quickly in just a week,” he said – Oliver Milman
